To participate in any HCRR on-water event, all members and guests must adhere to the following core policies:
PFD Requirement: All participants are required to wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket at all times while on the water. HCRR recognizes both the legacy Type I, II, III, and V classifications and the modern Performance Level (Level 70 or higher) labeling. PFDs must be in good condition and appropriately sized for the wearer.
Helmet Policy: Helmets are mandatory for all technical river sections (Class III+) and for all solo-craft participants (e.g., inflatable kayaks).
Substance Policy: HCRR maintains a zero-tolerance policy for the consumption of alcohol or controlled substances prior to or during on-water activities.
Waivers: All participants (members, guests, and guardians of minors) must sign the HCRR Release of Liability before any on-water participation.
We utilize a structured supervision system to ensure no boater is left behind and all hazards are communicated effectively:
Lead & Sweep System: Every club launch is anchored by an experienced "Lead" boat to navigate and a "Sweep" boat to provide upstream safety and recovery support.
The "Buddy" System: Participants in solo crafts are always paired with a partner for mutual oversight and assistance.
Conservative Scouting: We believe in the "if in doubt, scout" rule. Any participant can request to scout a rapid from the shore before the group proceeds.
Standardized Communication: Our members utilize universal river hand and whistle signals to ensure clear communication over the roar of the water.
We believe in matching the right skills to the right water.
Member-Only Technical Trips: Our technical whitewater trips (Class III+) are restricted to club members to ensure a cohesive safety environment and shared experience level.
Public/Social Events: Our public-facing events (such as the Annual Picnic or River Cleanups) focus on lower-consequence reaches of the river suitable for all experience levels.
Mentorship: Through our "Rookie Training" and mentored launches, we pair initiates with veterans to pass on the technical skills required for safe river navigation.
